Signed Antoinette vintage costume jewelry
Signed Antoinette vintage costume jewelry (1948-1960)
Although the costume jewelry brand Antoinette was founded in 1948, its history goes back much further. Born in Naples in 1907, Italian jeweler Anthony Aquilino immigrated to the United States with his family in the 1920s. After honing his skills in New York City ateliers, including Coro, he founded his own jewelry workshop Anthony Novelty co., in Providence, Rhode Island in 1940.
As early as 1945 and 1946, Anthony Originals pieces graced the pages of the most fashionable catalogs, including Harper’s Bazaar. Anthony patented several of his exquisite jewelry designs, crafted from 12-karat gold and crystals. Sadly, Anthony Aquilino died in 1948, at the age of just 40. However, the jeweler’s son and daughter, Anthony and Antoinette, continued the family business of creating elegant brooches, pendants and earrings under the trade marks “Anthony Creations” and “Jewels by Antoinette”.
Handmade with precision and care, Antoinette designs include 12 K gold, prong set baguette, oval, and marquise rhinestones of pink, purple, blue and white colors. The maker’s mark includes the inscription “Antoinette” in cursive on a cartouche in the shape of an artist’s palette.
