Margaret Ellis vintage modernist jewelry (1985-2013)
“I would encourage anyone who feels like they want to do a new thing to do it. Life is short. Make yourself happy”. Margaret Ellis (1943-2018).
The history of Margaret Ellis modernist jewelry brand began in 1983, when forty-year-old Margaret decided to go into the jewelry business. She founded her eponymous jewelry company Margaret Ellis Inc., in Nashville, Tennessee in 1985.
Her unique and stylish modernist jewelry made of sterling silver, gold, bronze and copper immediately found fans and connoisseurs of wearable art. Within five years, her pieces were gracing the pages of major fashion magazines and even appeared in Sex and the City and The Devil Wears Prada.
It is noteworthy that the designer hand-engraved her signature on the back of the pieces, and often indicated the year the jewelry was made. In addition, sometimes Margaret (a former Art teacher at school) engraved an inspiring quote or her own philosophy. This demonstrated not only her artistic talent, attitude to life, but also her high spirituality.
After 30 years of creating jewelry, Margaret retired and sold the business to her talented apprentice Mclaine Richardson in 2013.
Starting a new chapter in her life, Margaret and her husband moved to Mexico, where they enjoyed the beautiful nature and walking their dog along the beach in San Miguel. In her blog, Margaret shared her impressions of life in Mexico and her illness…
Margaret and her husband Fred Ellis met in 1978. They were a beautiful couple, happily living together for almost forty years until death separated them in 2018.
