Lunt Silversmiths Vintage Sterling Silver Jewelry
The history of Lunt silversmiths began in 1902 in Newburyport, Massachusetts and ended in 2008. Before founding his own company, George Colby Lunt (b.1864) han been apprenticed as an engraver at the jewelry store N. & T. Foster, and A.F. Towle & Son Co.
Founded by George E. Rogers (1849-1915), George Colby Lunt and William Caldwell Bowlen (1868-1934) the company was named Rogers, Lunt & Bowlen. However, having become a sole owner in 1935, George C. Lunt shortened the company’s name to Lunt Silversmiths. The pythagorean symbol RL & B Co was the original trademark. Later, the company registered the trademark “Treasure” and used it from 1921 to 1954.
Notably, the company handcrafted modernist and Art Deco jewellery in limited quantities since the 1970s. Made in sterling silver or gold, the marking on the reverse includes Lunt, sterling and sometimes the year of manufacture.
Noted for fine craftsmanship and good taste in design, Lunt company enjoyed success and was expanding its business. Thus, between 1920-22 Lunt it over The Franklin Silver Plate Company of Greenfield, Massachusetts. Also, in 1957 Lunt acquired The King Silver Company of Boston and the Richard Dimes Co. Lunt silversmiths had Showroom at 41 Madison Avenue, New York, NY.
Massachusetts based silversmith manufacturer Reed & Barton acquired Lunt Silversmiths in 2009. Noteworthy, both companies filed for bankruptcy – Lunt Silversmiths in 2010, and Reed & Barton in 2015.
