Born 31 May 1965 in Riga, Guntis Lauder is a talented and creative Latvian jewellery designer. The artist’s handwriting is instantly captured in the details, forms and materials used. To achieve this, the jewelry artist masterly uses such classic jewelry technology as inlay, engraving on a mammoth tusk and an ebony tree. Also, especially difficult soldering, casting and forging. Traditionally, the designer uses silver, mammoth tusk, garnets, green amethyst, pyrite, agate, smoky quartz, ebony, black and white pearls, topaz and more.
“I would like my jewelry to be worn and looked at for another hundred years, passed from generation to generation. Once, in the distant future, the ring I created will receive a new breath, and some successor to one of my clients will wear it. This explains the choice of materials – silver, gold, precious stones, ebony, mahogany, mammoth tusk, coconut bark, corals, pearls and amber. They can withstand time, do not fade, and will not lose their value. Probably, such solidity is in my Latvian blood. And, on the contrary, in the creative process of the birth of my ideas, I do not like any restrictions.”
Lauders graduated from the Department of Metal Design of the Tallinn Art Institute (1992), and received a master’s degree in art from the Latvian Academy of Arts (2005). Since 1996, organized a number of personal exhibitions in the Baltic States, Northern Europe and Germany. Also, participated in many significant international group exhibitions in Europe, America and Russia. In 1991, he became a laureate of the Baltic Triennial of Applied Arts in Tallinn. Noteworthy, in 1998, he received the prize of the Riga City Council “The best jewelry artist of the year”. His works are in the collections of the Latvian Museum of Decorative Arts and Design, as well as in private collections around the world.
