Kenart Jewelers Antique Dog Breed Brooches
Kenart Jewelers Antique Dog Breed Brooches (1920-1970)
One of England’s oldest jewellery manufacturers, Kenart Jewellers traces its roots back to 1880 established at the address Stamford Street, Ashton-Under-Lyne, Lancashire. Founded by James Kenworthy, Kenart Ltd. was a successful family business producing fine jewellery and novelties.
James’ sons Thomas and Fred Kenworthy joined the firm in the 1920s, opening further branches in Birmingham. It was from the 1920s that Kenart Jewellers began to feature British dog breeds as a design favourite. Noteworthy, the earliest hallmark of Kenart jewellery was “K. Ltd” and since the 1920s their hallmark has included a registration number, Kenart, made in England, and sterling silver. The company produced jewelry for nearly 5 decades, ceasing production in the early 1970s.
In creating these works, Kenart craftsmen tried to convey the resemblance to real animals as accurately as possible, reproducing the correct proportions of the body and the texture of the fur in silver and copper. The company sold its jewelry at the Crufts International Dog Show (held annually in London). Today, Kenart jewelry has become a collector’s item, delighting dog lovers.
Originally from Yorkshire, the Airedale Terrier is the largest representative of the terriers, extremely agile, intelligent and obedient dog. They get along well with children, as they have a playful puppy nature even in adulthood.
