George Sassen Vintage Fine Costume Jewelry
The history of the Sassen jewelry brand began in 1945 and lasted no more than three decades. Noteworthy, the earliest mention of the jeweler dates back to September 1949. In particular, Popular Science Monthly magazine published information about an illustrated jewelry catalog of George Sassen. According to it, George Sassen, located at 154 Nassau St., New York 7, NY, was a fine jewelry manufacturer. Already in the early 1960s, the company’s address changed to 350 West 31st West St., New York City, N.Y.
The company’s craftsmen created high-quality jewelry by hand, using 14 K gold, sterling silver, brass and natural stones – carnelian, lapis lazuli, pyrite, onyx, quartz, jadeite, etc. Published in 1960s and 1970s jewelry catalogs show the uniqueness and diversity of Sassen jewelry designs. The brand logo is a craftsman sitting at a table with a tool in his hands, while the maker’s mark includes “Sassen Handmade” and sterling.
Bold and very progressive for the 1940-60s, Sassen-marked jewelry is a very valuable acquisition for collectors and lovers of mid-century jewelry.
