Arthur Pepper jewellery
Arthur Pepper jewellery by Mode-Art jewelry company gives us the knowledge of its place of location – New York. ART is the conventional name for collectors of vintage jewelry from the most famous and widespread stigma of ART in later works. Arthur Pepper founded his jewelry company ART in New York City in the late 1940s. However, the more reliable data about the company is absent. Even the exact year of the liquidation of the company is not clear, we know for sure that ART produced their last pieces in the early ’70s.
If to compare the amount of jewelry that are among collectors and dealers, the company’s heyday was in the mid 50’s – 60’s of the XX century. Indeed, it was the “golden” age of costume jewelry. Meanwhile, ART company produced jewelry in very different styles, including – the Renaissance, Victorian and Art – Deco. Basically, decorations included flower, fruit and leafy motifs, and very rarely – figures of animals and reptiles.
Indeed, Art jewelry lines and incredible designs were extraordinary beautiful. “Maltese” crosses, small brooches in the shape of flowers or fruit, vegetables with colored enamels made ART decoration very popular among fashionistas. And, of course, the owners of this costume jewelry cherished their “treasure”. Perhaps, this explains the excellent preservation of most Art jewelry. Besides, the materials used in ART jewelry were always of excellent quality.
The basic technique was filigree metal work, and a combination of plastic, rhinestones, metal and enamel in the most unlikely combinations. Also, collectors of ART jewelry noticed a very similar style to the products of other companies. In particular, Florenza and Hollycraft (by the way, the founders of ART and Florenza were friends).
Almost all items (with the possible exception of the earliest works) jewelers marked as ModeArt, Mode – Art or just ART, but certainly with the copyright symbol.
Meanwhile, decoration of ART are mostly individual brooches, bracelets, necklaces and sets, and collectors need to try hard to collect a pair of one design. ART jewelry is very rare in the open market, which makes them highly sought after by collectors.
